Uncle's Tale of Clan Cats and Badgers
"Lily! Lily Rose!" Lily sat amongst a bushel of clover. She pricked her ears at her name but didn't look up at the caller. "My name's not Lily Rose. It's Rainwish," she meowed. A white tom cocked his head and meowed, "Since when?" "Since now." Rainwish paused and meowed, "What is it, Jack?" Jack padded up to her and meowed, "Mother calls for you, sister, for it is about to rain." Rainwish shivered. She got up reluctantly and followed her brother out of the grazing meadow to the large dull barn. The huge doors were wide open as they just walked in. Moist hay and the smell of wet animals made Rainwish wretch as they walked through to the opposite side of the barn. Rainwish eyed the humans as they brought the cows into their big pens and the horses into their stalls. She especially looked over the chickens. They always got up into another's business. The barn began to fill with the cries of the large animals as Jack padded up to a ladder. As he hopped up a couple steps he meowed, "Mother said the mice are up here today, Lily." "Ahem," Rainwish meowed before following. He turned his head to face her awkwardly, "Father and Uncle will be joining us soon too, Rainwish." She purred as she followed Jack. "So high up," she thought as they came to a flat solid surface. Hay bales piled up against the walls and farming tools lay aimlessly on the floor. Rainwish could already hear the scurrying of mice as their mother came up to them. "Wash yourselves, children," She meowed hastily while licking Rainwish's ears, "Company is to arrive any minute." "It's just Uncle and Father, Mother," Jack meowed. "There might be more," she meowed, "You know how Uncle Thomas can be, who knows? He may even bring by Thomasina and Ginger." Rainwish smiled at that. Thomasina was her best friend that lived farther down the country road in a nicely sized horse ranch. They themselves lived in a multi-used barn that was used to raise cattle and livestock. Rainwish began to lick her chest and paws. "Do be quick, Lily Rose," her mother meowed urgently. Rainwish opened her mouth to protest, but knew better than to do so. Mother's ears went up as she meowed, "Oh, they're here. Please hurry children and be ready to present yourself. Mother padded up to the ladder and looked down at the visitors. She stepped aside as Father came up. He licked Mother's muzzle and then turned to Jack and Rainwish. He padded up to them and muzzled them both as Uncle Thomas came up and shook his fur. "Thank you, dearie," he meowed in a thick Highland accent. "You are very welcome, Thomas," Mother meowed. "Otto, nice home indeed," Uncle meowed. Father nodded and meowed, "Thank you!" "Oh, may I help you dearie?" Mother meowed. She helped Thomasina up the last step. Rainwish watched her pad up to her with a smile.
They touched noses in greeting and purred. "How's it going, lad?" Thomas meowed while walking up to Jack. "Very nicely, Thank you. How's Aunt Ginger?" As he said it the ginger colored she-cat came up and laughed. "Nelly! Otto, great to see you," Auntie meowed. The cats came together in a circle and began to share news with one another. "We're supposed to get a mighty bad storm today," Uncle meowed. Mother meowed, "I thought it was just a simple spring shower on its way. Ginger shook her head, "Down at the ranch thunder is prominent." "Ah, that reminds me," Uncle meowed, "we saw something strange before Otto came to escort us here." Thomasina nodded, "Oh yes, something mighty strange." "Do so tell us," Mother meowed. Uncle meowed, "We saw a strange group of cats walking past the barn. They weren't any neighbors that I knew of." Ginger took up, "Yes, Thomas went over to them, across the field you know." Uncle shook his head, "I talked to those brutes a good deal. They were all thin and tough looking, definately feral like an alley cat. I asked where they had come from they said over the hills and from a forest that had Clans." Father looked perplexed and meowed, "Clans? Rubbish. Cats aren't the social type." "Maybe so," Uncle continued,
"but that's what my ears heard. I believe they are just confused foriegnors." "How many were their?" Rainwish meowed curiously. "Four at least, dearie," Ginger meowed. "This isn't the first time I've seen them," Thomasina meowed with a frightened tone, "They come every once in a while, back and forth across the abandoned horse field." "Yes, they often stop at the old Whittington barn down the road. Some lone barn cats live there I believe," Uncle Thomas meowed. "They sound dangerous, are they a threat do you believe, Thomas?" "Oh, very little, although I've been hearing rumours about it." "Yes," Ginger replied,
"Some say they eat bones. The Johnstons across the valley said that they even stole one of their kits." Mother wrapped her tail around the closest kit to her, Jack. Thomasina and Rainwish shivered. Ginger saw and meowed reassuringly, "They were probably mistaken dearies. Most likely it was a badger." "Oh, rotten things they are," Jack growled. "Ah yes, but they haven't been giving much trouble this year. After all the horses' loud thunderous steps scare them off," Mother meowed. Father nodded. "That is all true," he meowed, "now, are the mice running, darling?" Mother nodded, seemingly glad to take the subject of Clan cats and badgers off the mind. "They are all over the place," she meowed, "and the masters will be glad of our finds." The group scattered to go off hunting. Jack, Rainwish, and Thomasina hunted together. Rainwish meowed to her friend in a hushed meow, "Clan cats, can you imagine that?" "All I know is that I never want to meet them-" Jack hopped into a hay pile and killed a mouse. The squeel interrupted Thomasina. She continued, "They are also said to fight each other all the time, and that they live by no honor system." "Every society has a social system," Rainwish meowed. "Not so, Lily," she meowed. "My name is Rainwish now," Rainwish meowed. Thomasina nodded and continued, "do you consider killing each other and eating bones for teatime a working code of honor?" "It depends, and I find it hard to believe that they actually eat bones." "Either way, they are most certainly a rough-and-tough gang that is very dangerous, despite what mum and da say." Rainwish pondered what she had heard. "I wonder..."
